It’s unlikely that you will travel without trying the local food — and we always have time for sweets. From ice cream lasagna to unicorn cupcakes, Hamburg has an incredible variety of sweet treats in cozy places that can turn your day into a joyful sugar haze.
I’ve selected some of my favorite spots for you to read on and get a taste of Hamburg’s dreamiest desserts. Have fun!
Colorful and cozy place, close to the beach area and with more than 100 toppings you can choose to create your ice cream. They are the only cold-stone ice cream shop in Hamburg and the first in Germany!
You can get creative, choose the flavors, combine with toppings – or get one of the menu suggestions – and watch the magic happen: they put everything on a cold rock and the ice cream starts to gain form.
You can find them here: Fischers Allee 78
2. Fat Unicorn
Here you can have homemade cupcakes surrounded by a lovely decoration of pastel colors and unicorns.
Everything is freshly made for you with original recipes! You can also be creative and build your own cupcake, with the colors and toppings you want. Free your inner unicorn!
You can find them here: Hohe Bleichen 20
3. Holger Rönnfeld
Probably the most mouth-watering confectionery in Hamburg. Great service (lovely Mrs. Helga and Mrs. Monika), irresistible sweets and at the heart of St. Pauli neighborhood, this place won my heart in every possible way. Everything is handmade in this family business since 1953.
They have a big variety of typical handmade german sweets and delicious cakes. The place is cozy but it sells only take-away. You can also pre-order (for birthdays, for example).
4. Luicella’s St. Pauli
Handmade, without added flavors, dyes or anything else, Luicella’s offers the most creative flavors: be curious. The variety of choices can make the decision harder, but you can always get a sample of another flavor on top of your ice cream.
You can find them here: Detlev-Bremer-Straße 46
5. Herr Max
As cute as they are delicious, the desserts here are all handmade. The pastry chef, Mr. Max, combines classic confectionery with sophisticated patisserie, mixing different herbs, spices, consistencies and always creating new recipes.
This place used to be a dairy business from 1905, and is now a comfy coffee shop where you can relax, drink a cup of coffee and eat. They also serve ice cream and breakfast, and you can even take pastry courses.
6. Ice Cream Cafe Tropea
Ice cream spaguetti, lasangna or a sundae, no matter what you choose here, it will be huge and delicious.
Right by the Osterstrasse Station, this place is always crowded outside on sunny days, but you can find tables inside. The staff is friendly and they have table service.
You can find them at Osterstr. 116.
A small place with strong coffee and beautiful sweets. For macaron lovers as me, this place is a paradise.
They also host events here and there aren’t many tables for non-scheduled visitors. I recommend going in the early hours (11h – 13h) to have more dessert options and find a table.
Everything is handmade and you have several options, so it is hard to choose just one. Be prepared to want to try everything at once!
You can find them at Taubenstraße 15.
